Chanel Fall 2019 RTW

Analysis

The Ask

For this assignment, we were tasked with picking a favorite collection so long as it was active after 1959. Once we had a runway show picked out we had to fully research and analyze the show and connect if there were any historical references, does the designer reflect the zeitgeist of the time, and design elements. I choose Chanel’s 2019 Fall Ready-to-Wear collection. This collection as well as Karl Lagerfeld’s last collection before he passed away, so the runway show was also a tribute to him.

The Process

While looking through this collection I didn't notice any historical references such as drawing back to past collections. What is consistent is the attention to detail that is put into each show and Lagerfeld loved putting on a theatrical show as to set the mood for the audience. Another thing that is a signature for Chanel is the classic tweed, houndstooth, and the classic blazer. For his last show, Lagerfeld wanted to take the audience to an upscale winter resort with his looks and I believe he was able to get that message across.

The Outcome

This paper helped me with analyzing and identifying silhouettes and the attention to detail that goes into producing a show. As well from this, I was able to learn a little more background on Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld.
